Understanding Steel Standards: IS 2062 vs ASTM A36
Comparison of Structural Steel Standards
In structural engineering and manufacturing, steel specifications are crucial to ensure quality, strength, and weldability. Two of the most commonly used standards in India and internationally are IS 2062 and ASTM A36.
What is IS 2062?
IS 2062 is a standard defined by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for hot rolled medium and high tensile structural steel. It is widely used in India for fabricating bridges, industrial buildings, and infrastructure.
What is ASTM A36?
ASTM A36 is a standard defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials. It is the premier structural carbon steel specification in the Americas and many parts of Asia, specifying tensile strengths of 400-550 MPa.
Key Differences
- IS 2062 focuses heavily on micro-alloying and impact test grades (A, B, C).
- ASTM A36 is a general structural steel specification with minimal testing requirements for small thicknesses.
